VIJAYAN IN AYYAPPA STORY

Who is Vijayan?

Once upon a time, i.e., very long time before Manikandan, a small boy was there in a village somwhere Tamilnadu.  He was born to a very ordinary couple.  Vijayan was too smart.  He learned Vedas and became a Vedic Scholar.  He used to advise so many people who approached for their problems and those problems were solved.  Due to this lot of people approached for their solving their problems and he became very famous.  He gained very good name amongst people.  He got married to one Kanagalakshmi.  He was in good success.  They became wealthy.  They gave enough money to needly people.  He had much respects and all the people praised them.  But, he was not satisfied since they did not have any child.  They were worried because of this.

One day one sage appeared before him and said that he should go to a Sage Sabari who would be doing penance in praise of God Srirama in a hill surrounded by Azhutha malai, Karimalai, Neelimalai and Kaanthamalai near the river Pumpa.   He set out for that place along with his wife.   Sri Dharma Saastha appeared once before Sabari, told the entire story about Vijayan and asked her to bless these couple when they come there for her blessings.  The couple visited sage Sabari.  She blessed them and gave one pot made of pure sand.  As per her advice, they went to Urakkuzhi falls along with the pot given by her.  They took bath and took water in the pot.  They sat at one place and began to worship of Sabari and Sankara Narayanan (the name of two Gods Paramasivan and Narayanan).  While doing so, one animal came near the pot and the pot turned down.  The water fell down and it spread out in that area.  It formed like a river and that river only is called Pampa during the present days.  They immediately took bath in the river and all their sins were washed away.  Then Sri Dharma Saastha appeared in front of them and blessed them.  He informed them that during their next birth they would be born in two different kings’ families.  He also added that they both would be married in that birth.  He would become the king of Pandalam and the girl as the Queen.  In their life, Saastha, in his Avataar, would be brought up by them as their son named Manikandan.  They both were very happy.  After Saastha’s disappearance they returned to their House.  They got a son and were living very happily.  As told by Sri Dharma Saastha, they took birth as King Rajasekharan and Queen Perundevi.  They both got married and got Manikandan from the forest.
