UTHSAVAM AT SABARIMALA

Brahmmotsavam at Sabarimala


The Uthsavam at Sabarimala Sannidhanam was conducted in November-December, then in December-January and presently it is being conducted in the month of March-April – Meenam in Malayalam Month and Painguni in Tamil Month.  Poojas will be made to the Dwajahsthambham.  After that at auspicisous time the traditional kite (Kodi - flag) will be raised and tied to the Dwajahsthambham on the first day with proper pooja by concerned Thanthri and Melshanti of the temple in the presence of Devasthaanam authorities and other members at auspicious time.  Everyday, Seeveli would be conducted on elephant all the three times of the day.

On the eighth day the balipooja will be conducted and all the members will attend the function.  On the 9th day Pallivettah would be performed.  While going for Vettah, which is called as Pallivettah, all the people with Ayyappan idol will go out in procession very silently.  The Chenda, Naadaswaram will also keep quiet.  On reaching at the particular place, abhishekam will be performed to Ayyappan idol and then poojas will be conducted including.   One particular man would be dressed as Ayyappan and he will strike one object with bow.    They all will return to temple with idol.  While returning all will make sound out of joy.  Sounds by Chenda & Naadaswaram will be made.  After reaching temple Ayyappan idol would be laid to rest.  Next day morning Ayyappan idol would be set right only on seeing cow.  Very heavy crowd will be there in the temple to witness this.

 
                                             

 


               

On the same day, i.e., in the evening, all the people with Ayyappan Idol seated on Elephant in a procession will go to Pampa River to make Ayyappa idol to take bath.  Swami Ayyappan idol will be made to take bath on a particular place in Pampa River and many people will witness it.  After that some pooja will be conducted and after that everybody will reach temple at Sabari Hills.  Then in the presence of God idol, the kite tied to the Dwajahsthambham will be brought back to the feet of the sthambham and kept back for the next year.  This is called Brahmmothsavam.  I was also present in the Brahmotsavam and my photo (both) given above many years back.
