Why the Devotees
break coconut on the Holy 18 Steps while climbing up and getting down?
A
devotee goes to Sabarimala to have darshan of God Ayyappan. There is one main Bhoothaganam of Ayyappan by
the side of the Holy 18 Steps named Karuppanna Swamy. To have dharsan of Lord Ayyappan we have to
climb the Holy 18 steps and for that we have to seek Karuppanna Swamy’s
permission. Hence we are offering a
coconut to this Swamy as Neyvedhyam on the Holy 18 steps to please him. After darshan before or while getting down
through Holy 18 steps we are breaking a coconut again as a mark of conveying
thanks to Karuppannaswamy.
