IRUMUDI KETTU NIRA with Manthram –
How to bring out Irumudi

(This is as also as advised by Guru Poojya Shri Harihara Iyer, Sthaanam Kottarakkara Pulikkal Madom to various other Gurujis)
Required items for Irumudi: i.e., front mudi

1 Irumudi bag with 2 small bags with required rope to tie
1 Muzham (about 10”) chained flower
1 Bed sheet
1 side-bag as required
1 Mudra Coconut (the eye of the coconut should have opened correctly and keep the cork in it)
3 small coconuts
1.1/2 glasses of pure ghee
Three 1 Rupee coins
Kadali Pazham (a variety of banana)
Loose flowers
One plate of rice
Maligappuram items:
            Manjal Podi (Turmeric Powder)
Kukukum (Kumkum)
Pattu (Blouse piece – preferably of red colour)
Choodam (Camphor)
Bhasmam (the sacred ashes)
Gandham tablets (Chandan - Sandal)
Scented sticks (Agar bathi)
Achu Vellam (Jaggery – some pieces
Then (Honey – small bottle)
Panneer (Rose water – size: 4” height)
Malarppori (a product made out of rice seeds)
Aval (a product made out of rice)
Karkkandu (sugar tablets)
Raisins (dried grapes)

Now-a-days, some of the above are not taken by the Ayyappas.

Before Kettu Nira, perform Mahaa Ganapathi Pooja.  This is the usual practice.

Give pranaam (namaskarams) to the parents and sit in front of Ayyappan Picture.  Take a Mudra Coconut, as advised, and keep the same on a plate of rice filled with rice.  Guruji will be giving Ghee after chanting some Manthram.  Then take out the cork from the coconut and fill up it fully.  If the Coconut is filled fully, Guruji would be taking it and closing it with cork and sealing it.  He would be   putting Sandal & Kumkum over it.   Place it before God on the plate of rice.  Take some rice and flowers and by touching the coconut, chant the following manthram each three times:

Ohm Namaha - Om Hroom Namaha - Paraayagopthre Namaha -
Then, tell the following Saastha Gaayathri (minimum) three times:

Om Bhoothanaadhaaya Vidmahe Bhavaputhraaya Dheemahi!
Thannas Saasthaa Prachothayaath!!

The following is possible if a guruswami ties the irumudi in a house.  It it is done in a temple the manthram is sometimes not possible since it is time-bound one.  Genrally no one says the manthram.  If not possible atleast the guruswami should recite the Ayyappa moola manthram or Ayyappa gayathri in mind.

tell the following manthram:
Ehhiyehi Bhagavan Sri Sabarigireeswaram Sri Hariharaputhram Dhyaayaami – Asmin Aajye Aavaahayaami – Aaavaahitho Bhava – Sthaapitho Bhava – Sannihitho Bhava – Sannirudhdho Bhava – Avakuntitho Bhava – Suppreetho Bhava – Sumugho Bhava – Supprasanno Bhava – Varado Bhava – Praseetha Praseetha – Swaamin Jagannadha – Yaavath Abhishekasaanakam – Thaavathvam Preethibhaavena Aajyesmin Sannidhim Kuru – touch the top of the Coconut and say the following aghora manthram:        - Sahasraara humphat  - (by saying this manthram we are calling Saastha on this particular ghee and coconut and closing all the poles) – (if already advised by anybody ie., if Upadesam given by anybody), chant moolamanthram 12 times and keep the Mudra Coconut into a Mudra into a small Bag meant for it.  Then keep Kaanippon into it, i.e.. Take two bettle leaves, two bettle nuts and three One rupee coins and the concerned Ayyappan should keep the same into the particular bag – tie it well and put Sandal paste and Kumkum over it and keep it aside the inside of Irumudi (front side).  Keep Maaligappuram items into the other small bag and tie it also well. Put Sandal paste and Kumkum over it also.  Keep this small bag also into the same side of the Irumudi.  Keep the small coconut also which is meant for braking while getting down from the Holy 18 steps and ask the relatives of the concerned Ayyappan for whom the particular Irumudi is done.  The relatives should put a little rice three times using both the hands into the front portion (where you have kept the Mudra Thengai).   After collecting the rice so, Guruswamy has to put some rice and tie it well. Tie it well so that you are not opening the same before Abhishekam (enroute).  Put Sandal paste and Kumkum over it also.  Then Guruswamy should ask the concerned Ayyappan to give what all eatables he is going to carry.  Fill up the other side of Irumudi with rice and all other items that the concerned Ayyappan needs.  If nothing is there ask the Ayyappan to put some rice (three times) and tie both the sides well.  Then put Sandal paste and Kumkum over the front portion.   Thereafter keep some flower over the Irumudi.  After that the said Irumudi should be placed on the head of the Ayyappan after placing a Bed sheet over the head.  The Ayyappan should do Athma Pradakshinam (self rotation) for three times and keep the Irumudi wth the help of Guruji in some other place.  After finishing all Irumudies the Guruji wouldl be performing Pooja to all the Irumudies.  Thereafter the Ayyappas can take the Irumudies on their head and start for Sabarimala.   If the Ayyappan is a Kanni he cannot take the Irumudi of his own.  He should request the Guruji or other elder Ayyappans to do the same.   After placing the Irumudi over your head take Pathinettamppadi coconut (the coconut meant to brake while stepping up the Pathinettampadi and another coconut to brake at the place where you are doing the Irumudi while leaving for Sabarimala) from the Guruji.Ofcourse, Guruji knows about this.  All these have to be done only by a Guruji.  Before you fill up Irumudi take all you need for the travel and keep the same into the side bag.    After that you can travel as per your programme.  Note that Kanni Ayyappan should not take out the Irumudi from his/her head or vice versa.
